We define and describe culture as the collection of behaviors of the people within an organization.

Those behaviors are culture creators. The way we act with one another and with our customers, our behaviors, create the culture in which we work.

Some organizations promote fun behaviors, so they end up with a fun culture. At Southwest Airlines, they promote fun by allowing their flight attendants to bring their personalities into the inflight safety announcements. Those behaviors are culture creators. Conversely, some organizations promote fear and they end up with a culture filled with scared employees. Fear enters the room when trust is at risk, so behaviors that encourage trust will keep fear at bay and allow a healthier, more trusting culture to emerge

So, how do you create a better culture? Decide which behaviors are serving your employees and customers well and promote those. Make those your culture creators. Communicate them. Promote and revere them. Similarly, decide which behaviors you find detrimental to the success of your company and minimize those. Don’t reward them. Don’t feed those behaviors. Don’t allow them to thrive in your environment.

Your culture is waiting for you. Reward those behaviors you love to see and be a culture creator!
